Sophomore Alyssa Yungwirth struck out 14 and scattered two hits over 7 innings in the Wellsboro Varsity Softball team's 6-0 win over Wyalusing in the District IV AA quarterfinals on Thursday, May 26.
Yungwirth struck out the game's first 8 batters and the Wellsboro defense was stellar throughout the night. In three games against Wyalusing this year, Yungwirth has allowed 0 runs, 5 hits, and struck out 34.
The Lady Hornets scored first as Yungwirth doubled to score sophomore Sydney Tremper to make it 1-0 early. Wellsboro then added 5 more runs in the sixth as senior Sarah Ingerick, Yungwirth, sophomores Brianne Keane and Kailee Clymer, and freshman Emma Poirier all scored to put the game out of reach and end the Lady Rams' season.
Tremper and senior Darci Warriner were both 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Wellsboro while Ingerick, Poirier, Clymer, and Yungwirth added hits. Yungiwrth also added an RBI on the night.
"That's a big win for us and gives us more momentum into what we know will be a tough game but I think they're ready for it," said head coach Greg Carr. "She (Yungiwrth) did a magnificent job keeping them off balance. Her curveball and riseball were working great tonight."
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 18-3, and is their seventh in a row. The team will return to action on Tuesday, May 31 at the Moser Complex in Turbotville against No. 2 Loyalsock at 4:00 p.m. The game marks the Lady Hornets' third straight appearance in the District IV AA semi-finals.
