The Athens Boys Basketball team scored 36 first half points en route to a 63-51 win over Wellsboro on Tuesday, January 12.
Athens held the Hornets just eight points in the first quarter, while scoring 16, then exploded for 20 points in the second to jump out to a 36-18 lead at halftime. Wellsboro made up some ground in the third with 17 points, 12 of them coming off three-pointers from junior Jacob Singer, but they still trailed 45-35 entering the final frame.
The Hornets scored 16 points to Athens' 18, but were unable to overcome the large halftime deficit.
Singer led the way with 15 points, all from behind the three point line. Sophomore Dalton Prough scored 14 points, sophomore Quinn Henry had six, senior Dawson Prough and sophomore Collin Pietropola each scored four points, juniors Alden Weiner and Brandon Lamphier had three points each, and sophomore Nic Ingerick pitched in with two points.
The Wellsboro JV team squeaked out a 38-36 win to improve to 12-0. Freshman Andrew Brelo led the team with 11 points on the night, Ingerick dropped 10, and Pietropola added eight.
The loss drops the Hornets' record to 7-5 (2-3 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Thursday, January 14 at Northeast Bradford.
