Lady Hornets top NEB, 48-27

The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team evened up their season record with a 48-27 win over Northeast Bradford on Wednesday, December 21.

The Lady Hornets jumped out to an early first quarter lead, scoring 17 points and holding NEB to just 2. Wellsboro scored 14 more points in the second quarter to increase their lead, but NEB managed to score 12 points to bring the halftime score to 31-14 in favor of Wellsboro.

NEB closed the gap in the third by outscoring Wellsboro 9-4 to trail 35-23 heading into the fourth quarter, but a 13-point fourth by the Lady Hornets sealed the win.

Junior Lizzie Poirier led all scorers with 17 points and sister sophomore Emma Poirier added a career-high 15 for 32 of Wellsboro's 48 points. Senior Jessica Grab added 6 points, senior Autum Kitajima and junior Rachael Tuttle both scored 4, and junior Mikel Shabloski rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Wellsboro won the JV game 36-35 after trailing by a point entering the fourth quarter to improve to 2-3. Freshman Cathryn Brought had 10 points to lead Wellsboro with sophomore Heidi Zuchowski and freshman Jaime Palmer scored 7 points, and sophomore Dani Hunt and freshman Liza Manning each scored 6.

The win improves the Varsity team's record to 3-3 (2-0 NTL). The team will be back in action on Friday, December 23 on the road in Wyalusing.
