The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team picked up their second straight win this week as they escaped with a 7-6 win over Williamson on Wednesday, May 11.

The Hornets loaded the bases early in the first, but were unable to score. Williamson was able to capitalize and put 2 runs on the board, but Wellsboro would jump into the lead as seniors Dawson Prough, Larry Walters, and sophomore Dalton Prough all scored to make it 3-2. Williamson tied it up with a run in their half of the second, and both teams added 2 runs in the fourth.

Dawson Prough scored a run in the sixth and Walters scored in the seventh to put the Hornets up, then the defense held on for the win in the bottom half of the inning.

Dawson Prough led Wellsboro at the plate with a 4-for-4 performance (3 doubles), 3 RBI's, and scored 3 runs. Dalton Prough and Walters were both 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored an a walk, seniors Joe Allen and James Mundy were 1-for-4 along with sophomore Parker Mann, and senior Nick Tremper was 1-for-5.

Sophomore Johnny Rowland started on the mound for Wellsboro and pitched 4 innings, giving up 5 runs (3 earned) on 10 hits with a strikeout for a no decision. Mundy came on in relief for the final 3 innings and gave up 1 run (earned) on 2 hits, and struck out 4 batters for the win.

"I'm pleased with our responses tonight," said head coach Philip Prough. "We load the bases in the first with no outs and didn't score. Most years, this team would have been deflated. But they continued to give good at bats throughout the game and remain patient. Dawson continues to be hot at the plate. Tremper is playing a solid catcher position and calls a good game. He's doing the little things that aren't in the scorebook. Joe, James and Larry are contributing too. Our seniors are starting to hit a groove and it's nice to see that."

The win gets the Hornets back over .500 with an 8-7 record. The team will be back in action on Friday, May 13 for a non-league game in Danville.
