Hornets hang on against Liberty

The Wellsboro Boys Basketball team ended their three-game losing streak, but struggled in a 47-42 win over Liberty on Saturday, January 16.

The Hornets jumped out to an early 18-5 lead after the first and outscored Liberty 10-2 in the second quarter to take a 27-10 halftime lead, but Liberty came out strong in the second half and scored 18 points in the third quarter to trail by 36-28 entering the fourth quarter.

Liberty kept up the scoring in the fourth quarter, and coupled with Wellsboro turnovers, took the lead late in the game. Despite outscoring being outscored 14-11 in the final frame, the Hornets held on and swung the game back in their favor by going 11-for-17 from the foul line, including a perfect 4-for-4 from junior Jacob Singer and two clutch foul shots from sophomore Nic Ingerick for the win.

Sophomore Quinn Henry led the Hornets on the night with 11 points and Singer added in 11. Ingerick finished the night with eight points, junior Brandon Lamphier scored eight, senior Dawson Prough had six points, and sophomore Collin Pietropola rounded out the scoing with four.

Singer added three blocked shots and four rebounds, Henry grabbed six rebounds and made five assists, Lamphier had three steals, and Prough reached a milestone as he recorded his 100th career assist on the night.

The Hornets won the JV game easily as they outscored Liberty 57-9. All the Hornets scored on the night with freshman Holden Kennedy leading the way with 13 points to stay undefeated at 14-0.

With the win, the Varsity team improves to 8-6. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, January 19 as they host Sayre.
