The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team dropped their first contest of the season, falling 3-1 to South Williamsport on Saturday, September 3.
The Mounties scored two minutes into the game as a shot attempt by Dean Seaman deflected off a Hornet defender an into the goal to make it 1-0 for the only goal of the first half. South added two more goals in the second to make it 3-0. The first goal came with 31:07 remaining. Hunter Crawley snuck a shot past senior Casey Hoover on an assist from Aaron Orgitano. Then at 23:35, Donovan Killian drew Hoover up in the box and sent a shot past him.
The Hornets went down swinging, however, as senior Josiah Hill inched closer to Darby Alafoginis' career goal record with his 54th of his career. Hill scored with 18:02 remaining off an assist from junior Tanner Runyan. From that point on the Hornets had chances to score, but were unable to find the back of the net.
In the JV game, the Hornets won 1-0 on a goal by sophomore Adam Cornell. Sophomore Nate Redell made 8 saves in net for the shutout.
The loss starts the Hornets' season out 0-1. The team will be in action on Tuesday, September 6 at Athens.
