Hornet XC teams pick up wins over Athens, Wyalusing

The Wellsboro Cross Country teams got off to a strong start with a pair of 1st place finishes over Athens and Wyalusing on Tuesday, September 13.

In the boys race, Wellsboro beat Athens 23-38 and Wyalusing 22-35. Sophomore Aidan Perry led the Hornet boys with a 2nd place finish in 17:52, followed by junior Connor Brought in 3rd with a time of 18:44. Freshman Austin Richards (19:38) was 7th, senior Alden Weiner (20:01) was 8th, sophomore Bergen Weiner (20:36) was 10th, senior Bryon Callahan (20:36) was 11th, and junior Michael Stefanowicz (20:37) was 12th.

Sophomore Zack Busch came home 16th with a time of 21:09, freshman Lucas Citrino (23:34) was 23rd, junior Logan Morral (23:35) was 24th, and sophomore Taylor Wheeler (24:12) was 26th.

In the girls race, the Lady Hornets beat Wyalusing 23-32 and edged Athens 27-29. Freshman Kayla Mengee led the way with a 3rd place finish in a time of 23:35, followed by junior Anna Bleggi in 4th at 24:35. Sophomore Rachel Chamberlain (25:39) was 6th, sophomore Kara Doane (26:52) was 10th, freshman Kylie Butler (28:17) was 12th, and freshman Maddie Mann (28:35) came home in 15th.

"This afternoon was an outstanding effort by the team on a very challenging course that included several climbs," said head coach Ron Brought. "The girls were down a few runners due to injury and still managed two wins with only six runners. A very strong day by everyone lead by Kayla Mengee and Anna Bleggi. The boys ran a great race that was tough to beat. Wellsboro accounted for 7 of the top 11 finishers."

In the Middle School race, the boys lost 23-54 to Wyalusing and 45-53 to Athens. In the girls race, young Lady Hornets beat both team 15-50. Connor Owlet was the top male finisher with a time of 12:32, while Alexis Banik was the top female in 14:09.

The Varsity wins start out both team with 2-0 records (2-0 NTL). The team will be back in action on Tuesday, September 20 as they host Northeast Bradford and Troy.
