Hornet soccer blows past Coudersport, 7-1

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team picked up their second straight win with a 7-1 non-league victory over Coudersport on Saturday, October 8.

"Overall a great day," said head coach John Shaffer. "I'm very happy with how the boys played today in challenging conditions. They continued to pass the ball and play our style even in the rain and mud. Im happy that since Coudersport doesn't play JV, up 7-nil I was able to get everyone in the game."

Wellsboro got another hat trick out of senior Josiah Hill, his seventh of the season, and two goals by junior Gabe Leach. Hill now has 89 goals for his career, 11 away from the 100 goal milestone, and 36 on the year (38 last season).

Wellsboro scored on a direct kick from Leach and Coudersport own goal at 32:18 of the first half to make it 1-0, Wellsboro, then scored exactly 10 minutes later on an assist from Hill. Leach scored his second goal of the day with 25:03 remaining to push the score to 3-0. Hill added his first goal with 4:11 remaining to make it 4-0 Hornets at the half.

A goal by sophomore Holden Kennedy with 21:12 left in the second made it 5-0, then Hill scored the Hornets' final two goals, the first with 10:52 remaining on an assist from senior Jacob Singer, and the second with 7:45 remaining on an assist from Kennedy. Coudersport's David Kudrick (Kurt Lefever assist) scored with 3:42 left in the game to avoid the shutout.

The Hornets took 21 shots in the morning game to Coudersport's 15, but the Falcons had a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Wellsboro committed 15 fouls in the game, Coudersport committed 9, and Hill and Leach both picking up yellow cards. Senior Casey Hoover made 8 saves in 76 minutes of work and sophomore Nate Redell gave up a goal and made 3 saves in 4 minutes.

The win improves the Hornets' record to 11-4 (8-3 NTL). The team will be back in action on Wednesday, October 12 in Galeton.
