Senior Joe Allen pitched a complete game as the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team beat Wyalusing 5-2 on Wednesday, April 6.
Allen gave up 2 hits, 8 walks, and 2 runs (both earned) while striking out 5 batters. Wyalusing scored a run each in the first and sixth innings. After giving up the early run, the Hornet defense settled down and made 9 assists, 7 coming from senior Dawson Prough from third base.
"Joe pitched a consistent game and had good defensive help," said head coach Philip Prough. "He was around the plate all night. The key was getting his curve ball over for strikes. Dawson had started to be more comfortable at the plate, but his 3B defense was more impressive. It really helps our pitchers knowing we have kids who can make plays behind them. So Joe was able to throw his curveball with confidence because Nick Tremper can block it and his infielders can handle most grounders. It was a good defensive game for us tonight."
Wellsboro did all their damage with 2 runs in the third inning and 3 in the fourth to put the game away. Dawson Prough went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, 2 RBI's, and 2 runs scored. Sophomore Caleb Tennis was 2-for-2, sophomore Dalton Prough was 2-for-3, and sophomore Johnny Rowland, Tremper, senior James Mundy, and freshman Cam Tennis all had hits, with Cam Tennis' being a double.
The win improves the Hornets' record to 1-1 on the year. The team will be back in action on Friday, April 8 against Towanda.
