A penalty kick by senior Tucker Worthington in overtime gave the Hornets a 3-2 victory over South Williamsport on Saturday, October 31.
Worthington's game-winner came with 39 seconds remaining in the overtime period. Wellsboro scored two first-half goals, both by senior Dawson Prough with Worthington assisting. The first goal came with 36:55 left in the opening half, then Prough put the Hornets up 2-0 with 10:38 remaining.
South Williamsport battled back in the second half to tie the game and forcing overtime. Their first goal was at 18:05, then a penalty kick at 8:02 knotted the game up at 2-2.
"I'm very proud of the boys for how they fought through adversity once again," said head coach John Shaffer. "We went up 2 nil in the first half and the boys were playing great. In the 2nd half we reacted to calls that didn't go our way and when we get away from who we are we are beatable. At the break before overtime I challenged the boys to fight through and get back to playing our syle. We dominated the overtime period and the penalty kick was payoff for all the pressure we put on."
Junior Casey Hoover recorded 3 saves in goal as the Hornets took 19 shots to South's 4, and took 10 corner kicks compared with 2 by South Williamsport.
"Tucker Worthington played great tonight in the middle and Dawson Prough came alive today. South really didn't have a way to stop Dawson," Shaffer concluded.
The win improves the Hornets' record to 17-2-1. The team advances in the District IV playoff bracket, and will await their opponent at a date, time, and location to be determined.
