The Wellsboro Middle School Boys Basketball team dropped their season opener 26-18 to Athens on Tuesday, February 17.
Wellsboro was their own worst enemy Tuesday night as they let a six point lead at halftime slip away. Wellsboro started slow in the first half failing to convert several open jump shots and contested layups. Wellsboro's defensive effort help build their six point lead.
Turnovers plagued the Hornets in the second half as Athens applied more pressure. Wellsboro was forced to foul late in the fourth quarter and six of the Wildcats' 14 fourth quarter points came from the foul line.
"It was evident that tonight was our first game," said head coach Ed Hamm. "We made too many mistakes that allowed Athens to stay in the game. On a positive note, I was pleased with how we controlled the boards most of the game. Everyone played solid defense tonight. We will only get better as the season progresses."
Andrew Brelo led the Hornets with six points, Brandyn Tuttle and Holden Kennedy had four, and Taynton Repard and Cameron Tennis each had two points.
In the B game, the Hornets won 14-13 and Jacob Trowbridge had six points.
With the loss, the Hornets start the season 0-1. The team will be back in action on Friday, February 20 as they travel to Troy.
