The Wellsboro Middle School Girls Basketball team picked up their final win of the season with a 32-16 win over Williamson on Monday, April 6.
The Lady Hornets found themselves trailing 6-4 at the end of the first quarter as they had a hard time containing Williamson's Lilly Fitzmartin, who had six of her eight points in the first quarter. The Hornets changed up their defense at the end of the first quarter and outscored Williamson 11-2 in the second for a 15-8 halftime lead, and 24-12 after the third quarter.
Emma Poirier had 15 points, Heidi Zuchowski had nine points and three rebounds, Julia Smith added four points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals, Dani Hunt and Karinthia Witmer pitched in two points each, and Jaime Palmer had three steals, three assists, and two rebounds.
"After a rough start, our girls responded well to some adjustments we made and finished the game well against an athletic Williamson team," said head coach Darrell Morris. "I am so proud of our girls who finished the season 18-4, went undefeated in the NTL, and had two third place finishes in tournaments that featured some very good teams from the Williamsport, Scranton, and New York State areas.
"There was so much improvement in these girls and this team during the year," continued Morris. "Two of our four losses were in the first tournament, and we played both of those teams later and beat them both by double digits. This was a young team that only had five 8th graders on the A team and those five girls really did a fine job of carrying this team and playing for each other."
The A team ends their season with a record of 18-4 and a nine game win streak.
The B team won 18-4 to improve to 7-5-1. Lauren Singer and Luna Alexander had 4 points each, while Kayla Mengee, Chelsea Morris, Tiana Lecker, Nina Coolidge, and Caitlyn Callahan each added 2 points each. The B team will play their final 2 games Wednesday at home against Liberty.
