The Wellsboro Middle School Boys Basketball team captured the Galeton tournament crown on Saturday, March 28.

The Hornets started out the day with a 43-26 victory ver Cowanesque Valley, then defeated Cameron County 48-29. Wellsboro used full court pressure to build early leads in pool play against CV and Cameron County. On the offensive side the Hornets stayed patient when necessary. Wellsboro was not afraid to attack the basket to create scoring opportunities for one another.

The Hornets used the same defensive pressure against Galeton in the semifinals, which they won 44-28. Wellsboro met a fundamental Coudersport team that loves to run the floor in the Championship game. Wellsboro found themselves down 15-12 after the first quarter. The Hornets then railed back in the second going into halftime with a 28-19 lead.

"We reminded the boys that they needed to sprint back on defense because Coudersport scores a majority of their points in transition," said head coach Ed Hamm.

Coudersport would fight back in the second half cutting Wellsboro's lead to two points with 2:43 remaining in the fourth. Coudersport made a costly mistake of intentionaly fouling Andrew Brelo with 14 seconds remaining. Andrew made one of the two foul shots, and the boys proceeded to inbound the ball as time expired to win the championship, 45-42.

"Everyone played great team basketball today. All the spectators in the gym commented how fun the boys are to watch and what a great team they are," continued Hamm. "What some people may not realize is how much time these guys put in, not only during the season, but year round. Their hard work is paying off, and as long as they keep up the hard work they will be ready to compete at the next level."

With the win, the Hornets improve to 12-5.
