The Wellsboro Middle School Soccer team started the season off with a 5-2 loss to Athens on Tuesday, September 8.
Athens maintained possession for most of the game with precision passing. Kaeden Mann scored a first half goal off a Conrad Becker assists. Despite Athens numerous shots on goal and corner attempts, the Hornets had the game tied 1-1 at halftime.
Wellsboro took a 2-1 lead in the second half with twelve minutes remaining. Kaeden Mann scored his second goal off an assist from Will Poirier.
Athens fought back to win the game 5-2 scoring four times in the last ten minutes.
Nathan Heath made fifteen saves in goal.
"Athens is a well-coached team and each and every player on their roster is fundamentally skilled," said head coach Ed Hamm. "There were many positive aspects from the game today that we will build on throughout the season. We are still learning to play together, and despite the outcome I was pleased with the effort."
The Hornets start the season 0-1. The team will be back in action on Wednesday, September 9 as they host Galeton.
