The Wellsboro Middle School Girls Basketball team opened their season with a 3rd place finish at the Wyalusing Tournament on Saturday, February 7.
The team played in six games during the day at went home with a 4-2 record. Wellsboro lost their first game to Warrior Run 28-24 and was sent into the losers bracket of the double elimination tournament. The Lady Hornets then beat Blue Ridge 27-2, beat Elk Lake 33-8, beat Sayre 33-19, beat Warrior Run in a losers bracket rematch 31-11, then lost to Hughesville 18-13 to end the day as the 3rd place team.
Hughesville lost to Loyalsock in the championship game.
"We had a great day at the Wyalusing Tournament," said head coach Darrell Morris. "It was a tough task to play our first game of the season against a good Warrior Run team that had already completed their regular season. Our girls played well, but we had too many early season mistakes.
"With each game, our girls just got better and better, and it was really amazing to see the improvement from game to game. I was so proud of our girls in the rematch with Warrior Run, in which we won by 20 points. We really were a different team later in the day. Then we just ran out of gas against Hughesville, which was our 4th straight game in a row. I really couldn't be happier with the improvement, effort, and chemistry our whole squad displayed all day."
