The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team scored 22 second quarter points en route to a 63-10 victory over Cowanesque Valley on Tuesday, December 8 in their first home game of the season.
Wellsboro jumped all over CV in the first quarter as they held a 16-2 lead, then exploded for 22 points in the second quarter while holding the Lady Indians to 3 points. Senior Sarah Ingerick scored 8 of her 10 points during that span. In the second half the Lady Hornets outscored CV 25-5, with those 5 points coming in the fourth quarter.
"It was a good team win for us tonight," said head coach John Davis. "We knew coming into tonight that CV was having trouble on offense so there wasn't a whole lot to complain about, but we still have a lot to work on. They frusted us early with some defensive pressure that caused some turnovers, but once we settled down we we fine.
"I was really happy how we moved the ball once we settled down," concluded Davis. "The girls were very unselfish, spread the ball around, and shot very well from the field."
Sophomore Lizzie Poirier led the Lady Hornets with 12 points on the night. Three other Hornets, including Ingerick, were in double figures. Senior Jada Jackson scored 11 points and senior Alexa Singer also finished with 10. Rounding out the scoring for Wellsboro was junior Autum Kitajima with 8 points, freshman Emma Poirier with 4, juniors Jessica Grab and Janessa Davis with 3 points each, and freshman Julia Smith with 2 points.
The JV team won 45-10 to improve to 2-1 on the year. Smith scored a game-high 10 points and freshman Tiana Lecker contributed 9.
The win improves the Varsity team's record to 2-1. The team will be back in action on Thursday, December 10 as they host Canton.
