The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team suffered their first loss of the season by falling 4-2 to Troy on Saturday, April 11.
The Hornets gave up an early run in the first inning, but would tie it up in the third. The tie would be short-lived, however as a two-run double by Brooke Mattocks sparked a three-run fifth inning to give Troy the NTL Division 1 victory.
Junior Jenny Young and Freshman Alyssa Yungwirth led the Lady Hornets at the plate each going 3-for-4, with Young adding an extra base hit and both scoring runs. Senior Jordan Butters was 2-for-3, and Senior Peyton Wilson and Junior Alexa Singer added hits. Singer also drove in a run.
Singer went the distance on the mound for Wellsboro, giving up five hits with a strikeout on 88 pitches in a losing effort.
In the JV game, the Lady Hornets fell 3-0. Yungwirth continued her solid hitting day as she went 2-for-2 at the plate.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets are now 1-1 (0-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Monday, as they travel to Coudersport.
