The Wellsboro Varsity Wrestling team competed at the Coudersport Duals on Saturday, January 3 and came home with a 1-4 record.
Three Hornets picked up wins as the Hornets lost a close match to Sheffield. Senior Jack Chambers defeated Kevin Evans at 152 lbs. by pin in 3:46, Sophomore Kaleb Smith pinned Austin Gregerson at 220 lbs. in 5:47, and Junior Owen Covert won by forfeit at 285 lbs.
The Hornets picked up their first win of the season against Osway Valley. Sophomore Blaze Coolidge defeated Kendal Keech by pin at 138 lbs., Junior Vincent DeRita beat Simon Peter Couls by pin at 145 lbs., Chambers beat Dawson Mesler by pin at 152 lbs., Smith beat Dalton Green by pin at 220 lbs., and Covert won by forfeit at 285 lbs.
Three Hornets scored victories over Johnsonburg, all by forfeit. Covert won at 285 lbs., Chambers won at 152 lbs., and Smith won at 220 lbs.
Smith and Covert each scored forfeits for Wellsboro's only points against host Coudersport. Freshman Cory Busch lost by pin to Andrew Fry at 126 lbs., Coolidge lost by pin at 138 lbs., DeRita lost by pin at 145 lbs., and Chambers lost by pin to Gage Arnold at 152 lbs.
Chamber was the only Hornet to pick up a win against Cameron County. Chambers picked up a 9-3 decision against Jared Whiting at 152 lbs.
The Hornets (1-7, 0-2 NTL) will be back in action on Tuesday, January 6 as they travel to Sayre.
