Since dropping back-to-back games to Mansfield and Jersey Shore, the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team has won four straight games as they defeated Athens 62-49 at home on Friday, January 23.
Athens outscored the Hornets 14-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Hornets trailed 27-24 after each team scored 13 points before the half. Wellsboro, however would rally with a huge 18 point third quarter while holding the Wildcats to just six points, and then would score 20 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.
Senior Michael Pietropola led the team with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Kieron Smethers scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and blocked two shots, Freshman Quinn Henry scored nine points, Sophomore Brandon Lamphier and Junior Dawson Prough each scored six points, Senior Jake Mitchell had four, and Freshman Nic Ingerick rounded out the scoring with two points.
Athens won the JV game 53-49. Henry led the Hornets with 15 points.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 12-3 (4-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Monday, January 26 as they host St. John Neumann.
