The Wellsboro Middle School basketball teams opened their season as they traveled to Coudersport on Wednesday.
The girls team came home with a 20-14 win. Brianne Keane was Wellsboro's leading scorer with 8 points, 2 steals, 2 assists, and 4 rebounds. Lizzie Poirier added 6 points, 3 steals, 3 assists, and 4 rebounds, Rachael Tuttle added 4 points and 10 rebounds, and Sydney Tremper added 2 points, 5 steals, 2 assists, and 2 rebounds.
"Our girls did an excellent job defensively against Coudersport, holding them to 14 points," said head coach Darrell Morris. "We led through all four quarters, but missed a lot of easy baskets throughout the game. We had many opportunities to break the game open, but just couldn't finish at the basket.
"I was most impressed that our girls fought through our offensive struggles and played excellent team defense from start to finish, and that defensive effort was the deciding factor in the game," Morris concluded.
In the B game the Lady Hornets lost 21-4.
In the boys game the Hornets dropped a heartbreaker to Coudersport, 28-27. Cole Cavanaugh led the way for the Hornets with 9 points and 6 rebounds, Quinn Henry had 5 points, 3 assists, and 4 steals, Johnathan Rowland and Collin Pietropola had 3 points each, Dalton Prough scored 3, and Nic Ingerick added 2 points.
"Coudersport is a well-coached team," said head coach Ed Hamm. "Their defensive pressure caused us to turn the ball over and work harder on both ends the whole night."
In the B game the Hornets won 22-18 in triple overtime.
The girls start the season at 1-0 and the boys 0-1. Both teams will be back in action on Friday, February 14 as they host Canton.
