The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team picked up their first win of 2014 as they helf on for a 57-52 win over Mifflinburg on Saturday, December 6.
The Hornets and Mifflinburg scored six points each to tie in the first quarter. Wellsboro would score 14 points to take a 20-19 lead into the locker room before exploding for 23 third quarter points, highlighted by two powerful dunks by Senior Kieron Smethers to extend their lead to 43-28 at the end of the quarter.
Mifflinburg socred 24 points in the fourth quarter to the Horents' nine as both teams were working subs in to make the game interesting, but the Hornets were able to hold on down the stretch for the victory.
Senior Michael Pietropola led three Hornets who scored doulble-digits with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Dawson Prough finished with 16 and Smethers added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Jake Mitchell added three points, Freshman Collin Pietropola scored two, and Sophomore Brandon Lamphier and Freshman Dalton Prough scored one point each.
The win puts the Hornets at 1-0 to start the year. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, December 9 as they travel to Sayre.
