The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team suffered their first loss of the season as they fell to undefeated Lewisburg, 57-43 on Tuesday, December 30.
The first quarter was a defensive struggle as both teams could only muster six points a piece. Lewisburg would pull away from Wellsboro in the second quarter as they outscored the Hornets 16-8 to take a 22-14 lead at halftime. Wellsboro would cut the lead to 36-30 at the end of the third quarter but the Green Dragons were too much for the Hornets down the stretch as they exploded for 21 points in the fourth quarter to take the rematch game from last year's District IV first round playoff game.
Senior Michael Pietropola, who was averaging 25 points per game coming into the Tuesday, was held to only 11 points on the day by the Lewisburg defense. Senior Kieron Smethers would lead the Hornets on the day with 18 points and eight rebounds. Senior Jake Mitchell and Junior Dawson Prough added six points each and Sophomore Alden Weiner pitched in two points to round out the scoring.
Lewisburg's Sam Allen scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Green Dragons in the victory.
In the JV game, the Hornets lost 50-40 to fall to 4-2.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 6-1 (1-0 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Saturday, January 3 as they host Troy.
