The Wellsboro Varsity Wrestling team finished 7th out of eight teams in the Selinsgrove Holiday Tournament on Saturday, December 27.
Montoursville won the tournament with 152 team points. West Scranton (127) was 2nd, Selinsgrove (122) was 3rd, Shamokin (68) was 4th, South Williamsport (52) was 5th, Williamsport (52) was 6th, and Salisbury (39) was 8th.
Freshman Cory Busch came home 7th in the 126 lb. weight class. In his first match he lost to West Scranton's Jimmy Forsette by pin in 59 seconds, in his second match he lost to Selinsgrove's Gabe Ludwig in 1:24 by pin, in his third match he lost to Shamokin's Michael Britton in 40 seconds by pin, in his fourth match he lost to Montoursville's Mike Kozak in 1:07 by pin, and beat South Williamsport's Billy Kline in his fifth match.
Senior Jack Chambers finished 2nd in the 152 lb. weight class. Chambers beat West Scranton's Tim August 4-1 in his opening round match and lost to Montoursville's Jacob Strassner in 4:50 by pin in his second match. In his third match he pinned Williamsport's Ethan Brown in 2:32 and then beat Salisbury's Shane Simononis in 4:53 by pin. In his final match, Chambers beat South Williamsport's Connor Mazzante in 2:00 by pin.
Sophomore Kaleb Smith finished 4th in the 220 lb. weight class. In his first match he pinned West Scranton's Anthony Giordano in 1:36, then lost to Selinsgrove's Drew Boob by pin in 41 seconds in his second match. Smith would rebound to beat South Williamsport's Austin Shanklin by pin in 3:36 in his third match and would fall to Montoursville's Ben Cerney in 1:22 by pin and later lost by pin to Salisbury's Alexander Nicholas in 59 seconds to finish the day.
Junior Owen Covert finished 3rd in the 285 lb. weight class. Covert pinned Williamsport's Hayden Beiter in 56 seconds in his first match and lost to West Scranton's Kamron Vanwert in 1:06 by pin in his second match. Covert beat Montoursville's Brandon Steinbacher by pin in 55 seconds in his third match and lost to Shamokin's Adam Miller 4-2 in his fourth match. Covert would win his final match of South Williamsport's Noah Hartley by pin in 42 seconds.
The team will return to action on Friday, January 2 as they host Lewisburg.
