The Wellsboro Varsity softball team got a three-run home run and 4 RBIs from Junior Jordan Butters to defeat Athens 8-3 on Friday, April 25.
The Lady Hornets started off with two runs in the second and fourth inning and four in the fifth to capture the win. Junior Paige Carr had a 3-for-3 day outing two RBIs and a double, Junior Baylea Lehman was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs, Sophomore Sarah Ingerick went 2-for-4, and Sophomore Darci Warriner and Junior Peyton Wilson each had hits.
Sophomore Alexa Singer struck out five on the mound for Wellsboro in five innings and Senior Brooke Kohler struck out three in two innings. The win was Singer's eighth on the season.
"Our defense has been pretty spectacular in the last six or seven ball games," said head coach Greg Carr. "Today we needed to hit the ball a little bit better, but a win is a win nonetheless.
"I told the girls before the game that you can't take Athens lightly and they felt that pressure. Once the game got going they relaxed and started hitting the ball better."
With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 9-1 (3-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Monday, April 28 as they travel to Williamson.
