In their first NTL Division 1 matchup of the season, the Wellsboro Varsity boys basketball team fell to Towanda, 60-54.
Despite all five starters scoring in double-figures and leading 27-24 at halftime, the Hornets were outscored 17-10 in the third quarter and gave up 20 of Towanda's Noah Wheeler's 26 points in the second half to drop the league contest.
Junior Michael Pietropola led the Hornets with 12 points, Junior Kieron Smethers and Senior Joey Doganiero each had 11, and Sophomore Dawson Prough and older brother Senior Dylan Prough had 10 each.
Smethers had a double-double with 10 rebounds, Pietropola had six rebounds, Dylan and Dawson Prough each finished with five rebounds, and Doganiero had four steals.
In the J.V. game, the Hornets lost 35-26. Freshman Brandon Lamphier had 10 points and Freshman Bryon Callahan had 6.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 6-4 (0-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Friday, January 10 as they host Athens.
