The Wellsboro Varsity baseball team fell to Loyalsock 16-6 in the opening round of District IV Class AA playoffs on Tuesday, May 20.
The defending state champions scored six runs in the first inning and at least five runs in each of their five innings of the win. Loyalsock's firt run came off a base hit by Robbie Klein, but an error extended the Lancers' lead to 3-0. Loyalsock extended their lead to 5-0 after a two-run triple and later went up 6-0 on a wild pitch.
After the second inning, Wellsboro found themselves trailing 9-0 but didn't give up. The Hornets got one run back to trail 9-1 after Senior Brandon Owlett reached base on a bunt single and Senior Dylan Prough hit a RBI double. The Hornets found themselves with the bases loaded but a running error and flyout ended the rally.
Loyalsock added two more runs in the third inning to go up 11-1. Wellsboro continued to chip away at the Lancers' lead in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Sam Moss hit and RBI single and Prough hit a two-run single to bring the score to 11-4 Loyalsock. Loyalsock would push the lead to 14-4 after the fourth and scored two more in the fifth to claim the victory.
Prough went 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI's at the plate and Owlett went 2-for-4. Sophomore Dawson Prough was 1-for-2 with a walk and Moss was 1-for-1 with 2 walks, 2 runs scored, and an RBI.
Owlett started on the mound and Moss and Dylan Prough also pitched in the game.
The loss ends the Hornets' season at 9-10 (5-5 NTL Division 1).
