The incredible 2012-13 season for the Wellsboro boys basketball team came to and end at the hands of Delone Catholic in the frist round of PIAA State playoffs.
The Hornets, who last appeared in state play during the 1998-99 season, fell to the District III champions 63-47. The champs opened up a 16-2 lead in the first quarter, but allowed the Hornets to rally in the second quarter to trail 28-16 at the half.
"It really hurt us getting down 16-2," said head coach Todd Outman. "We would get it back a couple times to eight or nine but we didn't make that crucial stop or make a lay-up to make it a little bit lower in the total."
In the second half, Delone Catholic remained in control of the game by outscoring Wellsboro 35-31 to knock the Hornets out of the state playoffs.
Leading the way for Wellsboro was Junior Dylan Prough with 14 points and Junior Joey Doganiero with 12. Sophomores Kieron Smethers and Michael Pietropola had 7 points each, Senior Matt Reese had 5, and Senior Jordan Jackson had added 2.
With the loss, the Hornets end their season with an overall record of 23-3 (10-0 NTL West).
