Hornet softball falls to Towanda in District IV opener

The Wellsboro Varsity softball team couldn't overcome a 3-run 1st inning as they fell to Towanda Tuesday night in the opening round of District IV Class AA playoffs, 5-4.

The 10th seeded Lady Black Knights took an early lead over the 7th seeded Lady Hornets, but Wellsboro would respond in the 2nd inning with 2 runs of their own. Towanda scored 2 more in the top of the 3rd to go ahead 5-2, but the Lady Hornets rallied again with 2 more runs in the bottom of the inning to bring the score to 5-4, but they left runners stranded in scoring position as Towanda held on for the win.

Junior Maggie Smith went 2-4 with a home run, 2 runs socred, and 2 RBI's to lead the Lady Hornets at the plate. Freshmen Sarah Ingerick (2-4) and Alexa Singer (2-3) also had multiple hits in the game. Junior Brooke Kohler and Sophomore Jordan Butters also had hits, while Butters added a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Paige Carr scored a run while Sophomore Baylea Lehman added an RBI.

Kohler went the distance on the mound, giving up 5 runs (4 earned), 6 hits, 2 doubles, and 3 walks while striking out 9 batters on 102 pitches.

With the loss, the Lady Hornets season ends at 13-7 (7-1 NTL West).
