The Wellsboro Varsity boys basketball team edged Muncy 41-39 in the opening round of the South Williamsport Tip-Off Tournament to start the 2013 season.
The win gives the Hornets a chance to face host South Williamsport at the date and time to be determined.
The Hornets outscored Muncy 18-11 in the third quarter to rally for the win.
"The third quarter was our big quarter," said hed coach Todd Outman. "Our pressure defense got to them, we were down five to them in the third quarter and our defense turned things around. They had 20 turnovers in the game from our defense."
Senior Joey Doganiero led the Hornets with 14 points, Sophomore Dawson Prough had 10, and Junior Kieron Smethers had 9 points. Junior Michael Pietropola had six in the win and Senior Dylan Prough finished with two points.
"It wasn't the best offensive performance, we shot like 2-for-15 behind the arc, we are better than 41 points a game," continued Outman. "But our defense is where we want to be. We are very happy to get out of here with a win. Muncy is a very good team."
In the J.V. game earlier in the day, the Hornets defeated Muncy 46-41 in overtime. Sophomore Nick Tremper led the team with 24 points, Freshman Bryon Callahan had 9, and Freshman Brandon Lamphier had 6.
With the win, the Hornets start the season off with a 1-0 record. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, December 10 as they host Sayre.
