Hornet baseball takes 2nd at Giles Tournament

The Wellsboro Varsity baseball team ended the 2013 regular season by taking second place in the Giles Tournament Saturday.

In the first game of the day, the Hornets took on Milton and rallied from being down 2-1 in the 3rd inning to win 5-2. Freshman Dawson Prough had a hit and an RBI, Senior Ben Shaw had a double and three RBI, Junior Cody DeHaas, and Junior Brandon Owlett each had two hits in the game.

Owlett got the win, striking out nine, walking four, and allowing two hits and two runs. After the first inning, when Milton scored both of their runs, Owlett allowed just one hit and one walk.

In the championship game, the Hornets fell to host Montoursville, 11-10. The Hornets jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, but Montoursville scored six runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take their first lead of the game. After Montoursvillewent up 10-5 off a 3-run home run in the sixth inning, Shaw answered back with a 2-run home run of his own to bring to put the Hornets down 10-7.

Montoursville held an 11-7 lead in the bottom of the 7th inning, when the Hornets rallied. DeHaas and Senior Matt Reese singled before scoring on Dawson Prough's two-run double. Shaw reached on an error and Junior Brian Doty's RBI single made it 11-10 while moving Shaw to third.

With the tying run on 3rd base with Shaw, and Doty representing the go-ahead run on first, Montoursville's Pierce Ranck struck out the final two Hornet batters on 7 pitches to end the game.

Reese pitched five innings, taking the loss, and Prough finished on the mound.

With the split, the Hornets end the regular season with an overall record of 14-4 (6-2 NTL West). The Hornets will be the 5th seed in District IV Class AA playoffs and will host Wyalusing on Tuesday, May 21 at 4:30 p.m.
