The Wellsboro Varsity baseball team shut out Coudersport 10-0 to start out the season Saturday afternoon.
Junior Brandon Owlett went 3-for-3 with two triples and 4 RBI's to lead the Hornets while Senior Matt Reese (2-for-3), Senior Ben Shaw (2-for-5) and Junior Dylan Prough (2-for-4) were also strong at the plate. Reese and Shaw each had a double while Freshman Dawson Prough, Shaw, and Prough had an RBI each.
Senior Luke Rudy, Senior Connor Coolidge, Junior Cody DeHaas and Freshman Joe Allen had one hit each.
Prough was the starter, going 2 1/3-innings with two strikeouts, three walks and two hits. Owlett went the next 2 2/3-innings to earn the win with five strikeouts, two walks and a hit with Coolidge going the final two innings, striking out four with three walks.
"Being the first time our full team has been on the field, I'm very pleased with our performance. Especially our pitching," said head coach Philip Prough. "We had good control and composure. Offensively, not only did we collect a lot of hits, we hit the ball hard which is a promising sign."
With the win, the Hornets are now 1-0 on the year. The team will be back in action on Monday, April 8 as they host Mansfield.
