It was a classic Mansfield-Wellsboro battle as the two boys' basketball teams went into double overtime Thursday.
However, the Green Hornets prevailed thanks to some timely foul shooting, beating Mansfield 45-41 in the defensive battle.
The win keeps Wellsboro undefeated.
After a 7-7 first quarter the Hornets took a 17-15 lead at the half. Things remained close in the third as Wellsboro led 29-26 going into the fourth quarter. The Tigers rallied, taking a two points lead with 15 seconds to go.
That's when Wellsboro's Jordan Jackson sprung into action, tying things up with a two-pointer. With a few ticks left Jackson picked up a steal but the ensuing three point shot rimmed out and both teams would go into overtime.
Nobody scored in the first overtime as the teams combined to miss five foul shots. In the second overtime Wellsboro was up one when Mansfield's Marquis Delgado picked up a foul that was followed by a technical. Jackson went 1-of-2 from the line for the foul while Billy Sell was a perfect 2-for-2 from the line on the technical to seal the win for the Hornets.
Matt Reese led the Hornets with 15 points while Jackson added 11. Dylan Prough scored eight, Chase Barnes added four, Sam Mitchell had three with Joey Doganiero and Sell adding two points a piece.
Marquis Delgado and Alec Simpson led Mansfield with 12 points each while Taylor Hillson scored seven. Reece Correll added five while Sam Rotella and Justin Berkowitz scored two a piece. Dallas Dzuiba added one.
Wellsboro won the JV game 42-39 behind 12 points from Michael Pietropola and Nick Marple. Eric Brennan led Mansfield with 13 points.
