The Wellsboro Varsity baseball team suffered their third loss of the season as they fell to Towanda, 3-2. The Hornets found themselves trailing 3-0 entering the top of the sixth inning when their offense was able to produce two runs. Sophomore Dylan Prough walked to start out the inning and stole second base to get in scoring position.
Senior Nick Callahan drove Prough home with a double. Callahan would later score in the inning on an error to bring the Hornets to within one. The Hornets put up a fight in the seventh inning, but were unable to produce any runs.
"We left seven runners on base in the first three innings in addition to a base running error," said head coach Philip Prough. "You cannot give the best pitcher in the league (Mason Roof of Towanda) multiple chances to get off the hook and expect to win."
Junior Matt Reese went the distance on the mound for Wellsboro as he picked up his first loss of the season. Reese struck out seven allowed three walks, eight hits, and three earned runs. Sophomore Brian Doty and Callahan had the two Hornet hits.
"Matt did a great job tonight keeping us in the game," continued Prough. "I changed the line up slightly to give Matt a better chance to relax, pitch and just compete.
"We fell short but we're not walking away with our heads down. They're a good team and it wouldn't surprise us if we meet again," concluded Prough.
With the loss the Hornets fall to 6-3 (4-1 NTL West). The team will be back in action on Monday, April 30, as they host Sayre.
