The Hornets fell short in their first round District playoff game as they lost to Montoursville last night, 5-1.
The lone run scored by Wellsboro came in the second inning when Sophomore Dylan Prough scorched a triple into the right-center gap. He eventually scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
However, Wellsboro's defense had problems for the rest of the game committing 3 of their 4 errors in the next 3 innings.
"The difference tonight was that Montoursville was able to string their hits together and we did not," said head coach Philip Prough. "Throw in the errors during that time and the result is a loss. In addition, we hit into two double plays which ended potential rallies. It just wasn't our night in the field or on the base paths."
Senior Brandon Grinnell pitched 3 and 2/3 innings and Junior Dan Saniga finished the last 3 1/3. Grinnell takes the loss for Wellsboro and Christian Clark takes the win by pitching 5 innings. Rothrock collects the save for Montoursville.
Wellsboro ends their season with a 12-6-1 (9-1 NTL West) record.
"We fell short of our goal but we're optimistic about next year. Our seniors gave us a lot and they'll be missed but we return a core nucleus of defensive players, continued Prough. "But we can't rely on past performances. We plan on making adjustments and will work hard in the off season to improve."
