The Wellsboro girls soccer team picked up their first win of the 2012 season as they shut out Williamson, 6-0.
The team had a slow start to the game. Williamson did a good job of putting pressure on the ball and had a standout keeper who held the Hornets from scoring any goals in the first half. In the second half, however, it was all Wellsboro.
In the 34th minute, Sarah Kramer crossed the ball in front of the goal where Lauren Bleggi was able to finish at the far post to put the Hornets up 1-0. In the 32nd minute, Sarah Kramer capitalized on a foul in the box with a beautifully executed penalty kick to the corner to push the score to 2-0.
In the 26th minute, Kimberly Acorn connected with Sarah Ingerick on a short pass in front of the goal with a quick finish by Sarah. In the 11th minute, Brynn Ripley crossed the ball from the left side of the field and Brooke Kohler finished with a distant shot from the right side to put the Hornets up 4-0. Wellsboro's fifth and sixth goals were scored by Sarah Ingerick and Sarah Kramer.
"Our defense did an outstanding job winning the 50-50 balls, which allowed us to have the ball in our attacking half the majority of the second half," said first year head coach Carolyn Mitchell. "I am extremely proud of the girls because it was an all-around effort to play solid, composed soccer, which lead to some great scoring opportunities."
In JV action, the Hornets shut out Williamson 7-0 to pick up their first win of 2012. The team will be back in action on Monday, September 10 as they travel to Wyalusing.
