Freshman Peyton Wilson came through in the clutch to lift the Hornets to a 6-5 victory over South Williamsport in the first round of District 4 softball playoffs last night in Wellsboro.
Wilson, who had only 5 hits entering the game, drove a 3-run walk-off double down the left field line on the first pitch of the at-bat to propel the Hornets to victory.
South Williamsport led 3-1 after three innings and got two runs in the sixth to make it 5-1. Wellsboro got a run back, but trailed 5-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning before the rally. Freshman Lauren Bleggi started the inning by reaching on an error and Sophomore Brooke Kohler grounded into a fielder's choice leaving Bleggi out and Kohler at first.
Sophomore Maggie Smith flied out to right and Freshman Jordan Butters singled moving Kohler to third. Freshman Baylea Lehman then walked to load the bases with two outs. Freshman Paige Carr hit a soft liner back to the pitcher, but the ball was dropped, allowing Kohler to score and Carr to load the bases for Wilson.
Junior Breyann Campbell led the Hornets with three hits on the evening. Carr recorded two hits and Smith and Butters each had one hit. Kohler recorded her fifth win, as she struck out six and walked two.
With the win, the Hornets improve their record to 12-7 and advance to the second round of playoffs to face Troy on Thursday, May 24, at Troy.
