Trailing 50-47 with only 26 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the Wellsboro boys basketball team overcame the hostile South Williamsport crowd and beat the Mounties by the final score of 51-50. After trailing 17-9 after the end of the first quarter, the Hornets rebounded to tie up the score at the half, 25-25.
The second half was a close battle down that lasted right down to the final buzzer. After Sophomore Joey Doganiero hit two foul shots to put Wellsboro in front the Hornets defense were able to prevent South Williamsport from getting off a last-second shot. Dylan Prough led the team in rebounds with 12, and Jordan Jackson was the leading scorer with 18 points.
With the win, Wellsboro starts off the 2011-2012 season 1-0. In JV action, the suffered a 60-17 loss. The Hornets will be back in action on Monday, December 12 as they host Coudersport. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
