Athens HighlightsAthens' Colin Repko returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown as the Wildcats cruised to a 42-0 drubbing of Wellsboro (0-3) Friday night in Athens, September 15.

Wellsboro head coach Chris Morral commented that his squad seemed to be playing better, but they could not match the speed and talent of Athens, who are among the favorites to win the NTL.

"They are a really good team. They have a lot of speed and they have some experienced football players," Morral said.

"We are improving in some areas and I know the score does not reflect that," Morral added.

The offense was a different story for the Hornets. Senior running back Jesse Tom was held to just 92 yards on 18 carries. The offense allowed three sacks.

"As a staff we try to put guys in positions to make plays," Morral said.

However, the Hornets have not been able to convert on those opportunities.

Last Friday, Athens was able to take a 7-0 lead just seconds into the game on the big kickoff return. The Wildcats added a second touchdown late in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Wellsboro defense forced Athens into a punting situation, but Shane Raupers picked up a bad snap and hit Davaun Stedge for the first down. Two plays later, Athens scored their third touchdown.

Athens scored twice more in the first half and once more in the third quarter. The reserve players held the Hornets, who could not score late in the game.

The Hornets do have some young players in key positions, and the coaching staff are looking for senior leadership on the team.

Morral also said that the Hornets have not turned in a total team effort this season. He hopes to see that turn around as Wellsboro faces Sayre on the road this Friday, September 22.
