The Canton Warriors took their revenge on Wellsboro (0-2) for a last-minute defeat in Canton by downing the Hornets 17-7 last Friday in Wellsboro.
"Overall we lacked our focus and intensity," said Wellsboro head coach Chris Morral.
Morral said the coaching staff felt the Hornets had the talent to beat Canton. Unfortunately, the first half was characterized by mental mistakes while the second half was all about missed opportunities.
The Hornets, Morral said, lacked focus and were forced to throw more than they wanted.
"In order for us to get better as a team, we have to get more focused," Morral said.
He added that it is up to the coaching staff to get the players, especially the returning starters, to focus more.
Canton struck first, scoring a touchdown on the first drive of the game.
In the second quarter, the Hornets were able to capitalize on a Warrior mistake as Wellsboro came up with a fumble recovery at the Canton six yard line.
Senior running back Jesse Tom took the ball in for the score and Patrick Driebelbies add the extra point to knot the score at 7-7.
That was the only scoring Wellsboro could muster on the night.
Late in the second quarter, with 49 seconds to go, the Hornets set up their prevent defense. Canton responded with a screen pass that ended up netting the Warriors 64 yards. They hit the field goal and took the lead 10-7.
In the final frame, Canton put together a 40 yard scoring drive to make the final score 17-7.
The Hornets will look for their first win of the season when they face a tough Athens team on the road this Friday.
