Young Hornet Basketball teams improve to 4-0

The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams each improved to 4-0 with wins over Cowanesque Valley on Wednesday, November 13.

The boys A team defeated Cowanesque Valley 44-16. The team used pressure defense and generated turnovers early in the first half to take a 27-10 lead.

The Hornets were lead on the scoresheet by Hayes Campbell with 16 points and Caden Smith with 13 points. Also contributing on the scoreboard was Ian Hoose and Watson Feil each scoring 4 points, Mitchel Lechler with 3 points and Micah Vickery and Julian Mann both scored 2 points.

The B team also won 34-18 with 8 different Hornets scoring. Mitchel Lechler scored 11 points to lead the team, Micaiah Fitch scored 7, Micah Vickery scored 6 and Logan Rogers, Ayden Raymond, Braeden Abernathy, Garrett Corey and Owen Stevens all had 2 points each.

In the girls game the A team won 19-14. After trailing 7-1 after the 1st quarter the young Lady Hornets battled back to tie the game up at 11 at halftime. Wellsboro then held a slim 15-13 after the 3rd quarter.

Maddy Mascho had 7 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 assist, Chloe Brandenburg had 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist, Paige Logsdon had 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals, Emily Richardson had 2 points, 1 rebound, and 1 steal, Emily Morris and Hannah Gilmour added 2 rebounds each, Olivia Chilson grabbed 3 rebounds, Hannalee Cleveland added 1 rebound and 1 steal, and Emily Pierce added 1 rebound.

"We had an awful 1st quarter with 11 turnovers and only 1 point," head coach Darrell Morris said. "I am so proud of the grit our team showed the last 3 quarters against a tough CV team."

The B team lost 17-19. Emily Pierce had 7 points, Chloe Brandenburg added 6 points, and Cassi Mitchell chipped in 4 points.

The boys team travels to North Penn-Liberty later this afternoon while the girls travel to Liberty on Friday, November 15. Both teams are back home on Saturday, November 16 against Athens.
